Etymology

The name came into English from the French variation Gemmes of the Late Latin Iacomus, a substandard dialect variant of Iacobus = Jacob, from New Testament Greek Ἰάκωβος (Iakōbos), from Hebrew יעקב (Ya‘aqov). The name is derived from the word עקב "heel"; thus, the name means "(he who) grasps the heel". According to Gen 25:26, Jacob held on the heel of his twinbrother Esau when they were born. It is perhaps a popular etymology.
